OCEAN AND HAWAI'I DISCOVERY BOOKS

Who Lives In The Deep Blue Sea
Written by Ron Hirschi
Island Heritage 2008

WHO LIVES IN THE DEEP BLUE SEA is Ron's newest coloring book from Island Heritage. Filled with sea life not usually seen face to face, it also includes not one, not two, but four different sharks, including the rare and only recently discovered Megamouth!

Whalemail
Written by Ron Hirschi
Illustrated by Evon Zerbetz
Island Heritage 2001

Two young whale watchers accompany scientists on a sailing adventure to study the migration of humpback whales between Alaska and Hawaii. Along the way, postcards offer the reader a personal account of the journey, while main pages provide the reader with a wealth of information about whales and their ocean home. Postcards are tucked inside whaletail die-cut pages and a folding flap wraps around the end to hold all in place.

Whales Ho Teachers! Whalemail is filled with ocean information. It is also a great starter for classroom projects. Postcards and many layers of information and fun fill its pages. Kids inspired Ron to write this book and he now uses it in many school writing, art, and ecology projects. Whalemail is a good way to start your ocean lessons, but why stop at the seashore when you can use Whalemail as a model for kid created Bearmail, Mousemail, and Penguinmail books of their own.

Swimming With Humuhumu
Written by Ron Hirschi
Illustrated by Tammy Yee
Island Heritage. October 2004
ISBN: 0931548675

This fun exploration of Hawai'i features two young visitors from the mainland. Join Maddie and Cole as they snorkel, surf, and discover whales, porpoises, and more. "Little Books within the Book" fold out to reveal details about coral reefs, sea turtles, and other ocean life. Postcards to Gramma and a Message in a Bottle also fold out from the pages as our two explorers share their adventures with the reader.

Aloha teachers! Swimming with Humuhumu has been such fun to work with in schools. Kids love the little books within the book and use the information and colorful illustrations to help them create their own oceans books. See School Visits and Whale Watersheds for a great Big Book project, inspired in large part by the creative flaps and little books as well as content in our Humuhumu book! Who Lives in the Coral Reef?
Written by Ron Hirschi
Illustrated by Steve Sundram
Island Heritage, 2004
ISBN: 0931548128

The beauty of the coral reef is stunningly illustrated on the wrap around cover of this coloring book that invites readers to dive in and discover the wonders of ocean life. Text includes Hawaiian words and information about the ecology of the reef. Using the same guessing format as Ron's series of picturebooks with Barbara Bash, Who Lives in the Coral Reef challenges the reader as he or she fills the pages with color of their own.

Don't think coloring books are meant for the youngest of keiki. Ron has discovered that middle school students love to sit and color the images in Who Lives in the Coral Reef. This simple book is also a good model for middle school and high school students looking for a way to create a book of their own, helping to teach younger kids about reefs, ocean life, or other habitats. And to be sure, you can pick up a set of crayons and begin to color your world too, no matter how young or old you happen to be.

Ocean Seasons
Written by Ron Hirschi
Illustrated by Kirsten Carlson
Sylvan Dell Publishing

Seasons change in the ocean much as they do on land. Spring brings new plants and baby animals, summer oceans are aglow with sparkly plankton lights, and autumn winds blow across the open water. In winter the humpback whales migrate to warmer waters, just as some land animals move to warmer climates. In fun, fanciful form, Ocean Seasons children learn about plants and animals that are joined through the mix of seasons, food webs, and habitats beneath the waves. While set in the Pacific, similar changes occur in the Atlantic also.

Winter is for Whales
Written by Ron Hirschi
Illustrated by Big Island artist, Yuko Green
Island Heritage. 2007.

Anna, Matthew and Ron

Ron dedicated Winter is for Whales to Anna and Matthew because of their love of the sea and because they are such caring young people. The day of this photo, Anna and Matthew helped as part of a project to restore kelp forests along the shores of a small island. Like coral reefs in Hawai'i, kelp is great habitat for fish and other sea life. Thanks Anna and Matthew for your help.

Join Anna and Matthew on an island adventures within the pages of Winter is for Whales. You will meet Lehua and Kai who discover the often subtle, but sometimes dramatic changes in Hawaiian seasons. Winter is time for the arrival of humpback whales to Hawaiian waters. It is also a time when kids are surprised by a sudden snowfall atop Mauna Kea and they head up the slopes to scoop snow into Uncle's pickup truck. Hurrying back to the beach, Lehua and Kai build the world's first snow honu on the sand. Mango time, sunshine market treats, and the "o'opu rains" are all presented within many layers of text, little books within the main pages, and a special set of mini "Hawai'i Kids" magazines filled with seasonal news of the nesting turtles, whale arrivals, and colorful insects and birds up in the rainforest.
